KALAN'S BIO
THE STORY OF THE LITTLE PRINCE CROWNED KING
Kalan.
Porter. Do I really need to say anything else? The name speaks for itself,
but I've been told I have to write a full biography on the young lad, so here
goes (as if there's anything you don't already know about him. Then again
you may be a new fan, which is always appreciated!)
Alright, it's 1985, Kalan's parents are at an airport somewhere in Edmonton
(doesn't really matter which one) and Kalan has just been born! Picture it!
A symphony is playing, live violinists in the background (coincidence? I think
not!), ballet dancers serenading the boy
Right, right, back to the bio.
So, out of no where along comes Wayne Gretzky, of all people, and get this
- he asks to hold Baby Kalan! This isn't a surprise, as we know that any sane
person to walk past Kalan would ask to touch him, hold him, take him home,
etc. Of course as his parents are smart people (Janet & Rick-kiss kiss!),
they take a picture (not that they needed proof, after all this is a very
believable situation, as I have already clarified above) and now it is hanging
in the living room of their Medicine Hat ranch in Alberta. The province of
oil.
Now, let's fast-forward a decade or so. Kalan is 19, a hard worker and a musician.
Of course, he always wanted to become a successful musician. Maybe something
related to playing a violin? Or singing? But hey, why not take a year off,
high school is over. God knows I would.
"After
a year of college, do I need to take a year off and think about what I'm doing
with the rest of my life? I knew it had to be something music related",
Kalan remembers. "I'd always been around music, either with my
family, classical violin lessons or playing around Medicine Hat in a duo,
it was always there. It had to be a part of my life."
Of
course we know what he did! CANADIAN IDOL! HE AUDITIONED! HE SANG! HE WON!
Ahem. Pardon my enthusiasm. And now we know that Kalan made a wonderful choice
after much persuading by family and friends. He'd hoped he would have some
doors open with this experience, but uh, hmm
.mind my bluntness
IT
WAS A VERY BIG DOOR! HE WON! Alright, I'm sure everyone knows that already
so back to the deets.
As we all know, Kalan is classically trained on violin and viola at the Royal
Conservatory of Music by world renowned violinist and mentor Michael van der
Sloot. Wow.
Give
me a second. *Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale.* Sorry about that. He also knows
how to play the guitar and piano. And yes, Kalan comes off shy, quiet, timid,
reclusive, introverted, withdrawn - I'm sorry I was getting ahead of myself.
Anyhow, his introverted exterior adds to his... mysterious aura, shall we
say, which he is probably not aware of
Yes, Kalan, we've seen your mischievous
grin, the way you wield your violin as though it is a weapon, and your voice
may very well be your hidden power. I'm telling you, we're on to you
haha.
As if. Kalan - a conniving, evil, rebellious boy
?
Anyhow, Kalan's soothing voice is what brings us in, if you haven't noticed,
and yes it makes him seem much older than he is.
219 Days is Kalan Porter's long-awaited debut album, where the title stands
as the time he was contestant #7039 to the release of his debut album on ViK/BMG
Canada. Kalan, of course, co-wrote several tracks, with the fantastical help
of Perry Alexander (Keshia Chanté, Shawn Desman), creative forces Rob
Wells (Amanda Stott, Karen David) and Marc Jordan (Rod Stewart) as well as
legendary rock hero Randy Bachman.
"Kalan
is a creative force in the studio, he's musically mature and full of unique
ideas. It's easy to work with an artist with such a clear vision of who they
are and what they want to sound like" - Perry Alexander
I'm
sure that we can all agree that the intro of the album is the most mesmerizing
and entrancing piece of "edgy instrumental" music by Porter himself
(your cue to clap), which then leads into the rock tune "She's So Dangerous",
to the soft, seductive (if I may) "I Don't Wanna Miss You" to the
catchy first single, "Single". "In Spite of It All" brings
in Bachman's inspiration, and the album ends with the soothing, miserably
heartfelt "My Sweet One". In other words if you haven't listened
to the songs, bought the album, seen the video, well let's just say, I have
an intruder alert on my computer and I am ON to you. Swear to god.
"Kalan's
skills, personality and professionalism made for an enjoyable experience in
making this record. He truly blew me away with his vocal and musical abilities,
and gave 500% to every song." - Rob Wells
Who knew a sweet little farm boy like Kalan could do more than milking cows
and spending time on a buffalo cattle ranch? With his first single, "Awake
In A Dream" having already gone over 8 times platinum, and being the
highest selling debut single by a Canadian artist ever, Kalan is well on his
way to stardom, and an extremely successful music career. Kalan Porter is
no longer "that little farm boy" (then again, was he ever? I honestly
don't believe his curls could've made it through all that dirty work
).
Oh and not to mention, Kalan still believes he's just an average guy
now
let's all take a moment to laugh - well done.
